Accutane, developed in 1982, treated cystic acne by shrinking the oil glands within the skin. Accutane also was used to treat psoriasis. The brand name was discontinued after an Accutane recall was issued in June 2009. The generic form of the drug (isotretinoin) is available under the names Sotret, Claravis and Amnesteem.

About 1,000 Accutane lawsuits are pending in state and federal courts alleging Roche Holding, the manufacturer of Accutane, failed to warn users about potential side effects. Courts awarded millions of dollars to plaintiffs already in the initial Accutane lawsuits.

Inflammatory bowel disease refers to ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, which are two chronic diseases that cause inflammation of the intestines. People suffering from inflammatory bowel disease experience pain and cramping as a result of swollen intestines. The symptoms of the disease usually appear within four years of the last time the patient took Accutane.

A study found that the chance of developing inflammatory bowel disease was 1.68 times higher for patients who took isotretinoin, the generic name for Accutane, than for those who did not take the medication. People in the study who took isotretinoin had a chance of developing ulcerative colitis that was 4.36 times higher than those who did not take the drug.

Other adverse side effects linked to Accutane include birth defects and depression.
