If you or a loved one undergo dialysis, you might be familiar with the Fresenius Medical Care Company. Fresenius is the nation’s leading supplier of dialysis machines and operates the largest chain of hemodialysis clinics in the United States. It is also the manufacturer of two products that are used in dialysis – GranuFlo and NaturaLyte.

During the dialysis process, these products are added to neutralize the acid that accumulates in the bloodstream. Too much of the product can cause a dangerous condition known as metabolic alkalosis, which is associated with irregular heartbeat, heart attacks, stroke and death. The effects of metabolic alkalosis can last for up to two years.

Fresenius knew back in 2010 that patients taking GranuFlo and NaturaLyte were suffering from heart attacks and even dying. But Fresenius didn’t warn the FDA that they knew about these risks, and the FDA wasn’t able to recall the drugs until March of 2012.

In the meantime, an estimated 125,000 patients were using these products and may still be suffering from the effects. These drugs can increase the risk of heart attack by 400-600 percent, and as a result, many patients in the Kansas and Missouri area are suing Fresenius.
