Kansas City started the new decade off with a severe winter storm that dumped snow and over a quarter-inch of ice on roads and surfaces throughout the Kansas City metro, creating hazardous travel conditions for drivers in many parts of the country. Law enforcement and government agencies urged residents in Kansas & Missouri to stay indoors and warned motorists to stay off the roads.

Ice on the road can turn almost any vehicle into an uncontrolled moving object. Here are a few things to remember if you lose control of your car while driving on ice:

  • Remain calm
  • Do not apply the brakes (in most scenarios)
  • Avoid jerking the steering wheel
  • Keep the steering wheel straight
  • Turn the same direction as the slide
  • Avoid sudden changes in speed
  • Steer into snowbank or open area on the side of road if possible
  • Consider getting off the road until road conditions improve
  • Park away from moving vehicles
