If you're ever in an accident, first and foremost make sure any injuries have been dealt with and the police and rescue squad are on the way. Do not leave the scene of the accident.

Never admit fault or say you're sorry for doing something wrong, since you probably don’t have all the facts relating to the accident. Our office sees this all the time, and it can really hurt your case.

Instead, here's what to do after a car accident:

  • Get the other driver’s name, insurance information and vehicle information.
  • If there are witnesses, get their names and home and work telephone numbers.
  • If possible, take notes while the accident is fresh in your mind. Your notes may include how the accident occurred, who was involved, road and weather conditions, and any other information you can gather at the time.
  • Take pictures of the damage and the scene of the accident.
  • Take down the name of the police officer and ask for numbers where he or she can be reached (more often than not, the officers will have a card with this information).
  • Request a copy of the accident report that will be filed by the police.
  • If this was a serious accident with costly damages and physical injury to you and/or to others, contact your attorney as soon as possible.
