All drivers — regardless of age or type of license — are prohibited from sending, reading, or writing a text message or electronic message while operating a moving motor vehicle in Kansas. There is a $60 fine for texting while driving.

Drivers with a learner’s permit or intermediate license — those who have driving restrictions when unsupervised — are prohibited from using a cell phone while driving. Although some cities and counties are considering a ban on handheld devices, currently there are no statewide limits in Kansas on cell-phone use by adult drivers.

However, just because it's legal to use your phone doesn't necessarily mean it's safe. All drivers are advised to use extreme caution when using a cell phone.

It's easy to become distracted and look away from the road while invested in a conversation—especially if your hands aren't free because one is holding the phone.

If you have some reason you need to make a call, pull over to a safer place first, or ask someone riding with you to make the call instead. You can also buy a Bluetooth or other hands-free device, which would free your hands for the steering wheel and possible keep you safer.
