When you file a bankruptcy case, an automatic stay goes into effect to stop creditors. This includes stopping the IRS from conducting their collection activity. Examples include a pause on sending collection letters, garnishing your wages or your bank account, or filing liens against your property.

In most cases, the IRS will be free to resume collection activity unless the tax debt has been discharged or paid in full.
